A man reflects on his childhood
and working at his dads garage during the late
seventies. Two best friends plan to leave the
small town they grew up in. Matt; 18, works
at his dad's garage, smart, sensitive, just
graduated from high school. Schultz; 21, works
for his dad in construction, strong headed, high
school dropout. For Matt it's getting out of
the garage and pursuing his passion. For Schultz,
it's simply survival, to get away from his abusive
father. Even though Matt has a strong loyalty
to his dad, despite his father's drinking problem,
he also knows the impact leaving the garage
will have. Then a devastating incident occurs
and Matt will have to find his true
direction in life.

PRODUCTION NOTES
"Prod. Notes"
Writer/director Carl Thibault drew on his own
experiences growing up in Central Massachusetts
during the late 1970s to create the world of
The Garage. “Like Matt, I worked in my dad’s
garage and left home after graduating from high
school to move to Los Angeles,” says Thibault.
The journey of making The Garage began, as most
films do, with the script. Thibault wrote the
first rough draft of the screenplay longhand
over the course of four months--in four different
coffee houses. “It was a story I’d been living
with my whole life so it came out pretty easily,”
he says.
Thibault still had to find the financing to
produce The Garage. He decided to take a tremendously
bold step --and sold his newly remodeled home
of 14 years. Thibault then began the process
of scouting the ideal location for the script’s
small town setting. He scoured Northern California,
parts of Washington state, and even his native
Massachusetts trying to find the right look.
Thibault then got pointed in the direction of
Austin, Texas, after contacting the Texas Film
Commission, they e-mailed him photos of several
towns and garages. He took one look at that
first garage and knew he found the location.
He then loaded up a motor home, his two very
large hybrid wolf dogs and drove to Lockhart,
Texas, where he lived for six weeks. "The
Garage" was shot in 22 days in six towns
and in two states under Panavisions first time
filmakers grant program.
